Calm, just calm. The method of training the dog to calm attitude to passers – by, cyclists and passing cars.
For sure, many dog breeders are faced with such a frequent problem as excessive” love ” of the pet to catch cyclists, chase cars or bite the heels of running joggers, sometimes it brings the owner to the boiling point. What should I do? The answer is one: it is necessary to teach the dog self-control.
This article provides one of the methods of training a dog in this, frankly, not a simple matter. So, you will need: is a master (one pleasant thing), assistant owner, desirable not familiar dog man (for starters one pleasant thing, then number of desirable increase). Sea of Goodies as a reward, what the dog eats rarely, but loves most of all (pieces of cheese, sausage, meat or dry food). The place: a deserted place, preferably with no other people and all, distracting the dog or you elements. So, and now seriously, we start step-by-step training.
Ask your partner to hide from the dog’s field of view and appear only at your signal, then say the command “To me” when the dog approaches-give a treat. While the dog is enjoying the treat, give the signal to the partner to appear in the visibility zone, he should not come close, but only walk for 20-30 seconds, but so that the dog can see him, and then disappear from sight. This simple exercise should be repeated 2-3 times at least.
When you start the second stage, do not forget to repeat the first one and only then proceed to the next steps. This time, ask your assistant to jog in the dog’s field of view for about 10 seconds. When the dog sees a person, immediately command “To me”, without waiting until she even thinks that it would not be bad to catch this athlete. If the dog came up, praise and give a treat. Repeat this several times, and then let the dog rest: play a ball, leave the stick, or just let the pet walk freely around the neighborhood. When the dog unquestioningly approaches you and does not try to catch your partner, you can proceed to the next step. BUT: never go to the next stage of training until you make sure that the dog has memorized past skills well and performs without misfires.
Let your partner now start running a little faster in the field of view of the dog, but until it approaches it at a closer distance, also give the command, and then a treat. Repeat the exercise 3-4 times and let the dog rest.
Repeat the previous step and make sure that you have achieved excellent command execution from your pet. Now start reducing the distance between the dog and your partner. To start, reduce the distance to 20 meters, then to 10 meters, when you achieve a clear return of the dog to you, the distance can be shortened to 3-5 meters. Practicing the skills of performing the command “To me” while a stranger is running around the dog can take weeks, and sometimes months, but if you are calm and firm, then good results will definitely appear, do not rush things, clearly work out each stage with your dog.
Ask several people who are not very familiar with the dog to help you and repeat all the previously passed stages. if such volunteers are difficult to find, you can work out the elements in a crowded Park or square. When the dog responds calmly to athletes, you can be congratulated-you have achieved success.
Never yell at the dog if it does not follow the command clearly, you may be in too much of a hurry, and the dog loses self-control, remember that training is difficult, but it is worth the results obtained in the future.
This same technique can be used when training the dog to react calmly to cyclists and cars, but we recommend starting with the stage with the athlete, then it will be much easier for the dog to react calmly to the bike or car, it will have a reflex of how to act in this situation. These skills will help keep you calm, and perhaps the life of your pet, because in a situation where a cyclist or car will be close to the dog, it will already know what to do, it will come to you, and not rush with a loud barking, scaring the cyclist and passers-by or getting confused under the wheels of cars. Be patient and instead of your tailed imp, a calm and balanced dog will appear.
