What danger do autumn leaves pose?

Dogs love autumn leaves! You can play with them with your foot, or you can bury your head in them. Be sure to take a picture of your pet in the process – the photos will definitely turn out great! But while enjoying the autumn, do not lose your vigilance. Autumn leaves can be dangerous for a pet, and here’s why.

Why are autumn leaves dangerous?
Fallen multicolored leaves cover the ground like a blanket. It is pleasant to walk on them, it is pleasant to look at them, but we do not see what is under them. And if we are not very concerned with our shoes, then the dogs contact the leaves not only with the pads of the paws, but also with the nose, and the tongue, and maybe even the whole body. How can such contact be dangerous for them?

The No. 1 hazard. Sharp and piercing objects
Under the autumn leaves, there may be shards of glass, rebar, or other objects that the dog may get hurt. Unfortunately, usually owners notice them when the pet is already cut or bruised.

What to do?

Keep the dog on a leash and carefully inspect the place of walking.

Danger #2. Edible – inedible
Dogs are still fans of picking up all sorts of “muck”from the ground. If on a flat road the owner immediately sees the garbage and takes the dog away from it, then it is much more difficult to notice the “treasure” under the leaves. But the dog-thanks to its amazing nose – will not have such a problem!

Picking up food from the ground is very dangerous for the pet. The simplest thing that he can get from such a “treat” is a digestive disorder and helminthosis, and the most dangerous is a severe infection or poisoning, which in some cases can cost the pet his life.

What to do?

Teach your pet not to pick up food from the ground, work out the commands “can” and “fu”. Walk on a leash. If the dog still tries to pick up garbage, put on a muzzle.

Danger #3. Puddles and mud
You will say that without them in the fall anywhere and the dog will get dirty in any case. But it’s not about cleanliness, it’s about the reagent that starts treating the streets in the fall. Autumn leaves are mixed with mud and puddles, accumulate reagent. And it in turn remains on the dog’s paws, causing cracks and dermatitis.

What to do?

Wash your paws with warm water after each walk. Use a special protective wax for paws.

Danger #4. Ticks and fleas
We know that fleas are dangerous all year round. But ticks do not disappear with the passing of summer either. They go into hibernation only when the window temperature is set below 5 C. Until this happens, they are still dangerous and autumn leaves are a great place to meet them.

What to do?

Regularly treat the dog from fleas and ticks.

Danger #5. Overcooling
Autumn is rich in weather changes, wind and rain. The dog has all the chances to freeze on the street, catch a cold or get an exacerbation of chronic diseases. Felting in leaves (that is, on cold and wet ground) contributes to this.

What to do?

Don’t let your pet get too cold. Protect from moisture. Use special clothing.

Taking these recommendations into account, you will give your dog a wonderful – and, most importantly, safe-autumn. Enjoy your walks!
